Theme park attractions come and go all the time, and even though we’d like all our favorite rides and shows to stick around forever, the sad fact is that we have to say goodbye to at least a few every year.
Just a few weeks ago, Universal Orlando Resort confirmed that the long-running Bill and Ted show at Halloween Horror Nights would be closing forever after this year’s event, and also bid farewell to Dragon Challenge inside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. However, it looks like even more closures are in Universal’s future, including one that was just confirmed recently…
1. Terminator 2: 3D
Location: Universal Studios Florida
Status: Going extinct October 8, 2017
After all of the hurricane-related news over the past few weeks Universal fans may have missed Universal’s confirmation that Terminator 2: 3D will be closing forever in just a few weeks. This closure doesn’t exactly come as a huge surprise as this attraction hasn’t received much foot traffic in recent years, and has been rumored to be on the chopping block since at least 2015. However, Universal’s under the radar announcement of its closure was still a little surprising considering this is also one of the oldest attractions at the park, even if its popularity had waned a little bit in its final years..
As for the replacements for this attraction, Universal has said that the theater that currently houses Terminator 2 : 3D will be home to an all-new live action experience based on a high-energy Universal franchise that’s set to open in 2019. Thus far no credible rumors have surfaced about exactly what the future occupant of this space will be, but we’re excited to learn more in the near future!
2. Fear Factor Live!
Location: Universal Studios Florida
While the end of the Bill and Ted show has been confirmed for several weeks now, many are beginning to wonder about the future of Fear Factor Live, the other show that inhabits this performance space. When pressed during a recent interview with the Orlando Sentinel abut the reason for the Bill and Ted show, a Universal representative gave a cagey answer about constantly evolving the event, which leads us to believe that the initial rumors about this seasonal show closing down because Universal is planning to expand The Wizarding World of Harry Potter are probably true. Which means Fear Factor Live!’s days are also probably numbered.
If we had to guess, we’d say that Universal will probably keep this show around for the holiday season, and then close it down shortly after the new year, if these rumors indeed prove to be true. And speaking of closures in 2018…
3. Almost all of the Woody Woodpecker’s KidZone attractions
Location: Universal Studios Florida
We’ve known for over a year now that NintendoLand was coming to Universal Orlando Resort, but unfortunately details have been scarce about where this new land was going to go inside Universal Studios Florida, even as we’ve gotten the first hints about what kinds of experiences will be inside this new land. However, rumors have ramped up in recent weeks about the placement of this new land, and many are saying what we’ve been hearing since 2016: the Woody Woodpecker KidZone is toast.
In case you haven’t been to this part of the park in awhile, this area includes several attractions, including A Day in the Park with Barney, Curious George Goes to Town, Fivel’s Playland, Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster, Animal Actors on Location show and ET Adventure. However, in an interesting twist, some insiders are suggesting that while the majority of these attractions will be closing in the near future to accommodate this new land, Universal will be saving the classic ET Adventure attraction by refurbishing it and putting the entrance on the other side of the building, away from the area that will eventually be NintendoLand.
Of course, Universal hasn’t confirmed anything yet, but this placement does make sense for NintendoLand, and even though we’d be losing a lot of attractions at once, if rumors about ET Adventure being saved are true, that would certainly be welcome news for longtime fans of this park, who would like to see some of its history preserved even as it is going through a big period of change.
What do you think about this rumored development? Would you be sad to see all of these kid-focused attractions go away at once, or are you ready for work to finally get underway on NintendoLand? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
