7 MORE Confirmed Refurbishments Coming Soon to Walt Disney World (October 2016)

Being reported by Theme Park Tourist..

Disney parks are constantly changing their refurbishment schedules, making it difficult for guests to keep up with the operating times and latest news regarding their favorite attractions, resorts, shops, and restaurants. Here are a few big, upcoming changes that are either confirmed by their respective parks or at the least very strongly rumored for the very near future.

For October’s second refurbishment update, we take a look at a number of newly-announced refurbishments that are coming to the Magic Kingdom early in the new year, plus three already-announced refurbishments that have just been extended, and even the temporary closure of a popular eatery at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort.

1. The Hall of Presidents (Magic Kingdom)

Status: Confirmed

Dates: January 17, 2017 to June 29, 2017

In case you haven’t heard, the United States is currently embroiled in what will likely be remembered as one of the most bizarre elections in history between two wildly unpopular candidates. However, no matter how you feel about Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, the fact is that one of these two people will become President of the United States in just a few weeks, and that can only mean one thing to theme park fans…the Magic Kingdom’s Hall of Presidents attraction is getting a brand new animatronic in the very near future!

In order to make way for the new President (whomever he or she ends up being) it has been confirmed that the Hall of Presidents will be closing in early 2017 for an extensive six month refurbishment while the show is re-worked and the new animatronic added. While unconfirmed, many are saying a new narration may be added during this time as well, similar to what happened in 2009 when Barack Obama was added to this attraction.

2. The Walt Disney World Railroad (Magic Kingdom)

Status: Confirmed

Dates: January 9, 2017 to February 16, 2017

Though it hasn’t been that long since the Walt Disney World Railroad’s last refurbishment (which happened just six months ago in April 2016) the new year will bring another moderate refurbishment period for this attraction. During an almost 5-week closure it is expected that regular maintenance will be performed on the Walt Disney World Railroad, which will include not only a tune up for the train’s engine, but some work on the actual track around the Magic Kingdom as well.

3. Liberty Square Riverboat (Magic Kingdom)

Status: Confirmed

Dates: January 3, 2017 to January 12, 2017

Another attraction that will be going down in early 2017 for regular maintenance is the Liberty Square Riverboat. However, as there is no track or extensive equipment to tune up, this refurbishment will be a lot shorter, with this attraction only closing for just over a week in early January before reopening to guests once again in pretty much the same condition.

4. Swiss Family Treehouse (Magic Kingdom)

Status: Confirmed

Dates: Now – October 25, 2016

Though the previous refurbishments are all on the schedule for next year, some more immediate refurbishment changes have been happening recently at Walt Disney World as well. One of the most dramatic is that of The Swiss Family Treehouse, which feels like it has been under refurbishment for forever. While this attraction was originally supposed to reopen in September, its refurbishment was extended until mid-October just a few weeks ago, and in the days since this initial extension, it looks like this refurbishment has been lengthened yet again, as the official Walt Disney World calendar confirms that this attraction will now be closed until October 25, making this refurbishment nearly four months long in total.

Strangely, we still don’t know exactly what changes are being made to this classic attraction, but hopefully we will know more on October 25, assuming this refurbishment does not get extended again.

5. Dinosaur (Disney’s Animal Kingdom)

Status: Confirmed

Dates: Now – November 20, 2016

Though Dinosaur was originally scheduled to return from its refurbishment this week on October 17th, 2016, it looks like Disney will be keeping this ride closed a little longer as it puts the finishing touches on this extensive refurbishment. The ride is now scheduled to reopen almost a month later than expected on November 20th, 2016. While Disney has not said what work is being done on this ride during this refurbishment, considering the length of this now almost four month refurbishment, we’d imagine some major interior work is being done, and hopefully we will know more soon!

6. Gasparilla Island Grill (Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa)

Status: Confirmed

Dates: October 17, 2016 – December 15, 2016

The Gasparilla Island Grill at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa will be going through a moderate refurbishment that will kick off this week and last through the middle of December. During this closure, Disney will be offering hungry guests at the Grand Floridian a number of extra choices:

  • Guests can snag a quick Grab ‘N Go meal at Mizner’s from 7:00AM to 6:00 PM.
  • The Grand Floridian Cafe will also offer a Grab ‘N Go menu during regular hours
  • The Beaches Pool Bar and Grill will expand its service from 6:00 AM until 9:00 PM

7. Blizzard Beach (the whole park!)

Status: Confirmed

Dates: October 16, 2016 to December 24, 2016

Finally for this month’s second refurbishment update we have another closure that has been extended, but instead of adding additional days to the closure, Disney has actually brought this refurbishment forward. Though Blizzard Beach was originally supposed to close on October 23, Disney has elected to kick off this refurbishment a week ahead of schedule, with the park now shuttered from today until the Christmas holiday for its annual maintenance period. While Blizzard Beach has had some big issues this year (especially with its Summit Plummet and Slush Gusher rides) hopefully Disney will be giving this park the TLC it defeinitely needs during this newly-lengthened ten week refurbishment period.

Note: We keep a track of all upcoming Walt Disney World refurbishments over in our Rehab Watch section.
