Ever since its official announcement back in 2015, fans have been skeptical of Disney’s plans to bring Toy Story Land to life at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. However, Disney has faced criticism in the past and exceeded expectations before (most recently with Pandora – The World of Avatar), so hopes are high that this new land will be a nice addition to the park, even if plans for this new area aren’t as expansive as those for the neighboring Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge land.
It may seem hard to believe, but we’re actually just over six months away from this new land welcoming its first guests. And while Disney has yet to announce an official opening date (simply saying that this land will be open for Summer 2018), there have been a number of developments regarding the finer details of this new land you should definitely know about if you’re planning a visit next year.
1. There will be a new quick service restaurant, but it won’t be Pizza Planet
Earlier this week it was confirmed that Toy Story Land would be getting a new quick service dining location in addition to its two new rides. However, if you were hoping that the iconic Pizza Planet would be making an appearance here, you’d be wrong, as Disney has a completely different concept in mind for Toy Story Land that will help keep with the “shrinking guests down to the size of a toy” theme Disney announced back in 2015.
Known as Woody’s Lunch Box, this new quick service stop is will resemble a lunch box (complete with Tupperware) and thermos that has been transformed into a walk-up window that will serve both quick service meals and old-fashioned soda floats. Much like the Harmabe Marketplace at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, this new location will not have an inside dining room, and will instead have a small amount of outdoor seating adjacent to the walkup window.
No information has been revealed about the menu for this new location, but we have a few guesses thanks to a new sponsorship deal that has also just been announced for Toy Story Land…
2. Babybel Cheese is now the official cheese of Walt Disney World, and will have a strong branding presence inside Toy Story Land
Sponsorships are nothing new at Walt Disney World, and though recent projects like Pandora – The World of Avatar have opted to forego corporate partnerships in an effort to provide guests with an immersive experience away from the “real” world, it looks like Disney has no such ambition for Toy Story Land, and has announced that cheese brand Babybel will be sponsoring Toy Story Land as part of their larger distinction as “The official snack cheese of Walt Disney World”.
And while sponsors have typically kept a low profile around Walt Disney World, Babybel will have a big presence in Toy Story Land, as mini-Babybel cheeses will be featured in the construction around the aforementioned Woody’s Lunch Box dining location, as you can see in the preceeding image, and there will also be Babybel branding on the umbrellas in the dining area.
3. Alien Swirling Saucers vehicles revealed
Though we’ve gotten several extensive pre-opening looks at the Slinky Dog Dash attraction, Disney hasn’t shared much thus far about the other ride coming to Toy Story Land: Alien Swirling Saucers. However, thanks to a model of the new land that has recently been put on display at Walt Disney Presents, we now have our first real look at this attraction. As described previously, Alien Swirling Saucers has been designed as a toy play set that Andy got from Pizza Planet, in which Aliens are flying around in their toy flying saucers and trying to capture guests’ rocket toy vehicles while “The Claw” dangles above.
After a quick look at the ride vehicle above, its hard not to draw comparisons to the west coast’s Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree inside Cars Land at Disney California Adventure, which features the same style of cab and brings guests on a short ride that includes whiplike turns around two circular (and unseen) tracks in a figure 8 pattern across two turntables. Based on the ride vehicle above (and previously shared concept art) it looks like this attraction will provide an identical experience at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, just with a different Pixar theme.
Though interest in Toy Story Land hasn’t been very high, construction has been progressing quickly, and it has been speculated that Disney is quietly trying to get this land ready for a potential Memorial Day opening to take advantage of the holiday weekend as they did in 2017 for Pandora – The World of Avatar. Of course, nothing has been announced yet, and we wouldn’t expect official confirmation of an opening date to take place until early next year.
