Though it had been rumored for almost two years, Disney finally confirmed during the 2017 D23 Expo earlier this year that a Guardians of the Galaxy-inspired attraction will be added to Future World sometime in the next few years. Though this might seem like a strange addition to this part of Epcot considering the Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise is supposed to take place in the present day, Disney has said that this franchise makes for a good addition to Epcot’s Future World because it gives guests the chance to experience the excitement and adventure offered by space travel.
And while debates about appropriateness of theme continue to rage on, it looks like the first real details about what this ride will actually be like have been revealed. And it looks like Disney’s plans might be even more ambitious than originally thought!
1. This attraction is going to be a HUGE roller coaster
Though concept art for this attraction shows a barely-changed Universe of Energy building as well as a pre-show room, Disney has been fairly mum about what kind of attraction this might actually be. And while rumors circulated last year that this new attraction would be an indoor roller coaster of some sort, it was finally confirmed during the Epcot 35th anniversary that this attraction would indeed be a roller coaster. But if you were expecting the next Space Mountain, you’d actually be quite wrong as this new attraction will be on a scale never before attempted at a Disney park.
According to WDWMagic, Disney is still going to repurpose much of the original Universe of Energy building, but as just queue and pre-show space for this new attraction, which will actually occupy a new building which will be constructed in the space currently occupied by the defunct Wonders of Life pavilion, which has been mostly abandoned for nearly two decades. Now while you may wonder how a single attraction can occupy two buildings, it looks like there will be some clever Imagineering here, as there will be a “launch tube” of some sort which will catapult guests from the first building into the second, kind of like on the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.
This is certainly a massive development, and though we’ve seen some big attraction buildings before (the two attractions in Pandora – The World of Avatar are visible from the parking lot at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and are truly amazing to behold in terms of scale), this new project sounds quite impressive and on a scale that is truly like nothing else at Epcot. However, with this good news comes some bad news that might not be all that surprising…
2. This roller coaster isn’t going to open any time this decade
While Disney has yet to announce an official opening target for this still as-yet-untitled Guardians of the Galaxy attraction, according to WDWMagic, Disney does have an internal target for completion, and it might be a bit later than you might have thought: 2021. While the race is on to get a new theater for the Magic Kingdom, Ratatouille in France, and Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway open before the blockbuster opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in 2019, it looks like Disney is taking their time with this roller coaster, and don’t have any immediate plans to open this attraction before the next decade.
And while this is a good thing in a certain sense (after all, in theory if Disney takes their time with this attraction, it is bound to be really good, right), there’s also the fact that by the time 2021 rolls around, the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy will be complete (director James Gunn has said there will only be three movies) and it is unknown how much of a lasting franchise this will be.
While no one can argue that the Guardians of the Galaxy aren’t popular now, it is impossible to know how guests will feel about it after the films have concluded. Could this franchise enjoy residual popularity through the years, in the same way Tron has? It’s certainly possible. But it seems like if Disney really is planning on aiming for 2021 for this attraction, they are definitely taking a gamble here, as pop culture is one of those things that is really hard to predict. Than again, the Avatar franchise doesn’t really have that much of a passionate fanbase, but Pandora – The World of Avatar has definitely been a hit for Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
