American Cruise Lines announced plans to build three new cruise ships at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, MD. The first, the 170-passenger American Constellation, is nine weeks ahead of schedule and set to be deviled in May 2017. The next ship, which will also carry 170 passengers, will set sail in 2018, followed by a 195-passenger ship after that. American Constellationand its sibling ship will sail coastal and river itineraries in the U.S., while the as-yet-unnamed 195-passenger ship will sail U.S. rivers.

In luxury news, Scenic is counting down to the 2018 launch of the Scenic Eclipse with a $20,000 contest for travel agents. Running from November 1 through April 30, 2017, the contest will offer a grand prize of a Deluxe Verandah Suite on the 10-day Eastern Mediterranean Treasures cruise from Venice to Barcelona, departing on September 18, 2018, and including two roundtrip business class tickets, taxes and transfers.

The contest is open to U.S. travel agents only and valid on new 2017 river cruise bookings made between November 1, 2016 – April 30, 2017. Visit www.scenicusa.com/eclipsewinner.

In terms of construction updates, Seabourn’s newest ship, the Seabourn Encore, has completed its final round of sea trials off the coast of Italy in the Adriatic Sea. The new ship will expand and build on the line’s Odyssey class, which were introduced between 2009 and 2011. Seabourn Encore will maintain a high ratio of space per guest, enabling highly personalized service. A sister ship, Seabourn Ovation, will join the fleet in 2018.

Similarly, Princess Cruises has begun cutting steel for its fourth Royal Class ship at the Fincantieri shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia, Italy. This new build design follows sister ships Royal, Regal, and Majestic Princess, and is scheduled for delivery in 2019.

In Case You Missed It…

In other top cruise industry headlines this week, New York City will be getting a new luxury ship when Oceania homeports the Insignia out of Manhattan’s west side cruise terminal starting in 2017. The ship will offer more than 20 roundtrip and open-jaw voyages to New England, Canada, Bermuda, Greenland and Iceland, with overnight calls at destinations including New York City, NY; Charleston, South Carolina; Reykjavik, Iceland; St. George, Bermuda; and Hamilton, Bermuda.

Additionally, this week marked the official return of cruise ships to Mobile, AL, with the arrival of Carnival Cruise Lines’ Carnival Fantasy. Fresh off an enhancement that added new dining venues and amenities from the line’s Fun Ship 2.0 program, the ship will sail a schedule of four- and five-day cruises to Mexico from the port.
